1955
Jul. Internatinoal Student Section was established under the President's Office.
Aug. First group of international students, totally 5 from Vietnam, came to Nanjing University for 4 years' of study in meteorology.
 
 
1962
Sept. Two students from Vietnam came to Nanjing University for 3 years' of study in Chinese language.
 
 
1965
Sept. The Chinese Language Class for Vietnamese Students was established with 18 teachers, divided into 5 classes and receiving totally 100 students together with 1 group leader and 1 interpreter.
 
 
1966
Sept. Six students from Vietnam came to Nanjing University to study.
 
 
1977
Feb.  Enrollment of international students was resumed after the Cultural Revolution, still under the President's Office. 19 students were accepted from France, UK, West Germany, Australia and Vietnam, mostly majoring in Chinese and history. Some Chinese students were then assigned to live together with them.
Sept.  Receiving 29 students from 12 countries such as USA, Canada, Yugoslavia, New Zealand, Finland, etc.
Sept.  The Foreign Affairs Office of Nanjing University was established, under which the Section for International Students was responsible for the enrollment, management and logistic service of international students, while the Departments of Chinese and Hisotry were responsible for their teaching.
 
 
1980
Jul. As one of the first group of 12 universities to recieve short-term session international students, Nanjing University enrolled 78 short-term students from Japan, France, Sweden and USA.
 
 
1981
Mar. Initiated and hosted the National Conference on Teaching of Chinese Language and Literature to Foreign Students.
Sept. Delegation of the Johns Hopkins University led by President Steven Muller visited Nanjing University, and signed the Agreement for co-establishing the Center for Chinese and American studies.
 
 
1982
Jul. Receiving first group of self-financed international students. The CIEE Program started.
 
 
1983
Oct. First international student was allowed to live in the dormitory room for Chinese students. 
 
 
1985
Feb. The story of Elizabeth Ann Wichmann, an American student at Nanjing University who performed, transformed and promoted Peking Opera in English, was reported on People's Daily,the most influential newspaper in China.
Jun. The Office for International Faculty and Students was established to take charge of affairs for international students.
 
 
1986
Sept. Receiving first class of international MA students.
 
 
1987
Oct. First group of 2 American scholars came to Nanjing University for post-doc studies.
 
 
1988
Apr. Conferring first Master's Degree for international students.
 
 
1990
Jun. Designated as temporary HSK Test center.
Sept. Receiving first class of international students taught in English.
 
 
1991
Nov. Xiyuan Building was put into use as dormitory building for international students.
Dec. Professors of Nanjing University were issued the first group of certificates for teachers of Chinese as Second Language.
 
 
1992
Apr. Xiyuan Building was assigned under supervison of the Office for International Students.
Sept. Receiving first international PhD student from Sudan.
 
 
1993
Mar. The major of Teaching Chiense as Second Language received first international student from Republic of Korea.
Aug. Designated as formal HSK Test center.
Nov. Youyuan Center opened as the first regional entertainment center for international students in China.
 
 
1994
May The first Chiense Speech Contest for international students was held in Youyuan.
Nov. First group of international students were allowed to rent apartments outside the campus.
 
 
1995
Jun. Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Office of International Students with exhibition series.
 
 
1996
May East China Commission under the China Association for Teaching Chinese as Second Language was established in Nanjing University.
May First PhD. degrees issued to international students.
Jun. First Master's Degree in Teaching Chiense as Second Language issued to international students.
 
 
1997
Sept. The Institute for International Students was established. The then Vice President Hong Yinxing served as the first dean.
Sept. The undergraduate class of Chinese Language for international Students opened with 21 students from USA, Korea, etc.
 
 
2001
Apr. The then Canadian ambassador to China Joseph Caron studied Chinese language for 2 months in Nanjing Universityh with home stay.
 
 
2002
May Elizabeth Ann Wichmann retunned to Nanjing University. A professor then at University of Hawaii, presented Qin Xianglian, a Peking Opera classic in English for the centennial celebration of Nanjing University. 
 
 
2005
Sept. The undergraduate major of Teaching Chinese as Second Language for Chinese students was established and first group of 28 students were admitted.
 
 
2006
Jul. Zeng Xianzi Building was put into use, mainly for teaching and admiminstration of the Institute for International Students.
Jul. The first class of UN Staff Chinese Training Program began in Nanjing University with 45 students.
Sept. Initiating the 3-year Mater of Education program of Classroom & Teaching Theory. 
Dec. Renovation of Xiyuan Building started.
 
 
2007
Jan. The Confucius Institute at University of Sheffield, UK opened.
May Twenty-six outstanding international alumni from Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA, Slovenia, Sudan and Korea gathered at Nanjing University for the celebration of her 105th anniversary, including Australian and Japanese Deputy Consuls General in Shanghai.
Jun. The Confucius Institute at University of Meobourne, Australia opened.
Sept. Renovation of Xiyuan Building accomplished.
Oct. Initiating the 3-year part-time professional master's degree program of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages.
 
 
2008
Mar. The Confucius Institute in Atlanta opened, in cooperation with Emory University, USA.
Mar. First class of 20 people enrolled for the professional master's degree program of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages.
Occ. The Confucius Institute at University of Artois, France opened.
 
 
2009
May The Confucius Institute at the Catholic University of Chile opened.
Jul. The Confucius Institute at Freiburg University, Germany opened.
Sept. The program of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages was changed to 2-year full-time professional master's degree progrm.
 
 
2011
Jul. With 45 participants, initiating the Summer Camp for Children of Overseas Nanjing University Alumni.
 
 
2012
May Twenty-five outstanding international alumni from Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA, Sweden, France and Korea gathered at Nanjing University for the celebration of her 110th anniversary, including Japanese minister to China.
 
 
2013
Apr. The Confucius Institute at George Washington University, USA opened.
 
 
2014
May Nanjing University was listed as Jiangsu Chinese Education Base by Jiangsu Provincial Government.
Jul. The Confucius Institute at Goettingen University, Germany opened.
 
 
2015
Jul. Hosting the first Summer Camp for Outstanding Overseas Chinese College Students with a total of 50 participants in cooperation with Jiangsu Provincial Office of Overseaas Chinese Affairs.
Dec. Two professors and one international student of the Institute for International Students won Thesis Innovation Prize at the 12th World Chinese Teaching Conference in Shanghai.
